Shopify fee calculator
Shopify takes a card percentage plus a fixed fee on every sale. On the US Basic online rate that is 2.9% of what the customer pays plus $0.30 per transaction — so a $48 order gives up $1.69, about 3.5%. Two extra fees catch sellers out: currency conversion when the buyer pays in another currency, and Shopify's own fee for not using Shopify Payments, which is charged on top of your gateway's rate.

Shopify fees, transaction fees and payouts — sellers' questions
- How much does Shopify take per sale?
- On the US Basic online card rate, 2.9% of what the customer pays plus $0.30 per transaction. On a $48 order that is $1.69, about 3.5%. The percentage hurts more on small orders because the fixed $0.30 does not shrink with the basket.
- Is the Shopify transaction fee the same as the payment processing fee?
- No, and this is where most fee maths goes wrong. Shopify Payments charges the card rate. If you use another gateway, that gateway charges its own rate and Shopify adds a third-party transaction fee on top — 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced, and a lower negotiated rate on Plus. Shopify states these fees are additional to the processor fee and vary by plan.
- Why is my Shopify payout lower than my sales?
- Per order, the usual suspects are the fixed fee per transaction, the currency conversion fee when a buyer pays in a currency other than your store's, and a third-party transaction fee. A payout is also not one order: it bundles refunds, chargebacks, adjustments and payout timing, so it will not match this calculator line for line. Okiela does not read your payout records.
- Do Shopify fees come out before or after tax and shipping?
- The card fee is charged on the full amount the customer pays, including shipping and tax you collect. That is why tax-inclusive pricing quietly raises your fee per order while adding nothing to your revenue.
- What fee percentage should I use to work out my margin?
- Use the currency amount, not a rounded percentage. A flat 2.9% understates the cost on low-value orders and ignores conversion and gateway fees entirely, which is enough to turn a profitable-looking order into a loss.
